Why Buy a Handmade Headboard? The Case for Slow Furniture
Share
The Problem with Fast Furniture
Most furniture sold today is designed to be replaced. Flat-pack construction, synthetic materials, and cost-driven manufacturing mean that the average piece of bedroom furniture lasts a fraction of what it should. A headboard bought from a high-street retailer might look fine for a year or two — but it won't age well, and it won't last.
What Handmade Actually Means
When we say handmade, we mean it literally. Every Alma Design headboard is built by hand in our UK atelier — a solid timber frame, cut and assembled by our makers; high-density foam, shaped and fitted by hand; fabric, cut with care for pattern placement and finished with traditional upholstery techniques. No shortcuts. No automation.
This approach takes longer and costs more than factory production. But the result is a piece that looks better, feels better, and lasts significantly longer.
The Value of Longevity
A well-made upholstered headboard, properly cared for, will last 15–20 years or more. When you divide the cost of a handmade headboard by the number of years you'll enjoy it, the price per year is often lower than a cheaper alternative that needs replacing every few years.
This is the logic of slow furniture — buy less, buy better, keep it longer.
Supporting British Making
Every Alma Design headboard is made in the UK, using fabrics from British and European textile houses. When you buy from us, you're supporting a small team of skilled makers, a network of independent fabric suppliers, and a tradition of British craftsmanship that's worth preserving.
Bespoke as Standard
One of the great advantages of handmade furniture is that customisation is straightforward. Every Alma Design headboard can be made to any size, in any fabric from our range — or in a fabric of your own choosing. This level of personalisation simply isn't possible with mass-produced furniture.
