The Best Fabrics for an Upholstered Headboard

The Best Fabrics for an Upholstered Headboard

Why Fabric Choice Matters

An upholstered headboard is a long-term investment. The fabric you choose will be looked at every day, so it's worth taking the time to get it right. The good news is that there's no single correct answer — the best fabric depends on your room, your lifestyle, and your personal taste.

Linen & Cotton

Linen and cotton are the workhorses of upholstery fabric — durable, breathable, and effortlessly elegant. They work in almost any bedroom style, from classic country to contemporary minimal. Ian Mankin's range of natural weaves and stripes is a perennial favourite for good reason.

Best for: Relaxed, timeless interiors. Rooms with natural light.

Printed Fabrics

A bold print can transform a headboard from a functional piece into a genuine focal point. Botanical prints, geometric patterns, and painterly designs all work beautifully when scaled correctly for the headboard size. Fermoie, Peony & Sage, and Penny Morrison all produce prints that translate exceptionally well into upholstery.

Best for: Making a statement. Rooms with a neutral palette that needs a focal point.

Velvet

Velvet is the ultimate luxury upholstery fabric — rich, tactile, and deeply satisfying to look at. It works particularly well in bedrooms with a more dramatic or glamorous aesthetic. GP & J Baker's House Velvet is a beautiful example of the genre.

Best for: Dramatic, luxurious bedrooms. Rooms with low, warm lighting.

Boucle

Boucle has had a well-deserved moment in recent years, and it shows no sign of fading. Its looped, textured surface adds warmth and depth to a headboard without the formality of velvet. Chase Erwin's boucle is exceptional quality and ages beautifully.

Best for: Contemporary, warm interiors. Neutral colour palettes.

Embroidered Fabrics

Embroidered fabrics — like Colefax & Fowler's exquisite embroidered prints — bring a level of detail and craftsmanship that elevates a headboard to something truly special. They're best appreciated up close, making them ideal for a bedroom where the headboard is the centrepiece.

Best for: Classic, refined interiors. Guest bedrooms and principal bedrooms.
